Definition: A metaphor were a phrase is applied to something which is not literally applicable.
Examples:
1. It seems the time just flew by.
2. He was caught like a duck out of water.

You could see metaphors when the author is trying to compare something big and is trying to get it across the reader by comparing it to something to emphasize.
A metaphor is almost the same as a simile just not using like or as.
